The Barley Platform (provided by the Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Research [IPK])

Barley seeds are mutagenized by treating with the alkylating agent ethylmethane-sulfonate (EMS) at concentrations between 20 and 60 mM for determining and achieving high mutation frequencies. M1 production is streamlined to high-density plant cultivation keeping barley plants till maturity in 299-well potting plates on flooding tables. ipk1
M2 families are cultivated either in the greenhouse or under field conditions. A bar code system tracks any mutant in all steps of further use. M2 individuals are regularly observed and screened, regarding visible and interesting mutant phenotypes.
